Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Therapy
What is Class 4 Laser Therapy?
Class 4 laser therapy may sound futuristic but it has become a standard of care for many musculoskeletal injuries. Laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects. The light that is transmitted via the laser helps stimulate certain processes within the body that help provide relief to symptoms including pain, swelling, and limited range of motion.
The Class 4 laser is a heat producing (but doesn’t hurt!) laser vs. the Class 3 laser which is a cold laser.
How does Class 4 Laser Therapy Work?
The wavelength of the laser used in Class 4 laser therapy penetrates deeper and more efficiently than the Class 3 laser allowing it to pass energy to the nerve, muscle, ligament, and tendon tissue in a short amount of time.
Class 4 laser therapy stimulates the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which drives many of the processes within our cells. This increased production of ATP helps speed up the healing process within cells. As a result of increased ATP production the patient experiences an improvement of symptoms, including reduced pain, swelling, and range of motion and of course, the heat from the laser is soothing as well.
Class 4 Laser Therapy Benefits
By applying stimulation to the specific wavelengths that affect the cell receptors inside our body, laser therapy can modify the effects of injured tissues. As such, it can reduce the overall duration of inflammation, while enhancing the body’s healing and repair capabilities. Here are just a few results that have been observed in various clinical studies as a result of laser therapy:
- Increased Vasodilation
- Increased Collagen Production
- Improved Cell Metabolism
- Increased Lymphatic Response
- Increased Microcirculation
- Increased Nerve Regeneration
- Higher Pain Threshold
- Increased Bone and Tissue Repair
- Improved Enzyme Response
- Reduced Edema Magnitude
- Reduced Duration of Inflammation
You’ll walk away from class 4 laser therapy feeling better but the therapy continues to work on the cellular level to improve your musculoskeletal health after you leave the office.
What Conditions Does Class 4 Laser Therapy Treat?
We use class 4 laser therapy on a range of issues including but not limited to:
- Neck Pain
- Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
- Elbow & Joint Pain
- Shoulder Pain
- Low Back Pain
- Soft Tissue Damage
- Sports Injuries
- Plantar Fasciitis
When it comes to chronic conditions, research shows therapy lasers can be used to combat consistent pain along with promoting circulation in damaged tissues. Laser therapy can prove to be a powerful solution when it comes to reducing pain without the side effects that come with medication.
Laser therapy has also been effective when it comes to treating acute conditions. It can bring the pain under control swiftly, assist with the healing process, and help to promote better results.
Laser therapy has proved to be effective in improving recovery times after a workout or activity. It is also capable of reducing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
What Does The Treatment Feel Like?
When performing laser therapy, the device will be administered directly to the skin because laser light is not able to penetrate through clothing. This means the device will be touching your skin, where you will feel soothing warmth during your therapy. Many patients who receive laser therapy treatments provide great feedback, saying the experience is enjoyable.
Patients also report getting treatments using higher-power lasers like ours can rapidly decrease the pain in their muscles, thus further helping with their recovery. Those who suffer from chronic pain can also see this effect is certainly pronounced and is why laser therapy is a great solution for treating all kinds of pain.
Is Class 4 Laser Therapy Safe?
Yes, laser therapy devices were cleared by the FDA in 2003 for the efficacious and safe increase of micro-circulation and reduction of pain. As such, therapy lasers are an effective and safe option for treatments that involve musculoskeletal pain as a result of injury.
Are there Side Effects to Laser Therapy?
Laser therapy treatments are non-invasive and use non-ionizing laser light. Therefore, by definition they are very safe. Photobiomodulation treatments with a class 4 therapy laser are one of the safest treatment modalities in a health care office! Occasionally a patient may feel a mild achiness or soreness in the treatment area.
